Get ready for a major retrospective of Balenciaga in Paris.
The city's Museum of Decorative Arts will stage a six-month-long show dedicated
to the house founded by Cristobal Balenciaga seven decades ago.
Entitled "Balenciaga Paris," the exhibition will be run from July 6 to
January 28, 2007.
Balenciaga is widely regarded as among the half dozen greatest designers ever,
someone who genuinely influenced fashion with his simple sophistication and
legendary cut.
The exhibition is the latest mono-designer show presented by the rue du Rivoli
museum, and follows not long after the important retrospective on Yohji
Yamamoto. It also marks the first time Paris has seen a major show on Balenciaga,
a once legendary house that has staged a massive comeback recently under the
design helm of Nicolas Ghesquiere.
Balenciaga opened his first house in San Sebastian at the age of 23, later doing
the same thing in Madrid and then Barcelona. He was famed for deconstructing
garments of other talents like Elsa Schiaparelli and Madeleine Vionnet, to
better comprehend their secrets. He moved to Paris in 1937, launching his own
maison at 10 Avenue George V. His pure style, obsession with black, Spanish
influence and subtle use of fabrics were evident from the beginning.
The couturier presented his final collection in 1968, when, in reaction to the
violent events of that summer, he suddenly quit Paris and left for his native
Spain, where he passed away four years later.
Since 1997, Ghesquiere, whose powerful personal aesthetic has been brilliantly
allied with the house's iconic imagery, has directed Balenciaga.
The upcoming exhibition, with scenography by Dominque Gonzalez-Foerster and
Benoit Lalloz, will feature over 160 works, and include pieces by Ghesquiere.
